The sperm acts as an antidepressant in women

Semen makes you happy because it acts as an antidepressant, according to a recent study indicates that it can act as a psychoactive drug in the body of women, improving mood and cognitive abilities.

The study, released by New Scientist magazine focuses on the benefits of semen that may be related to evolutionary advantages.

The discovery that semen acts as a natural antidepressant is due to Dr. Gordon Gallup and Dr. Rebecca Burch, State University of New York.

The study began with a suspicion, as Gallup ran in the 90’s, with the finding that unlike heterosexual women, sexually active couples living together, lesbians were not sexually involved the famous “McClintock effect” (which women who share common spaces synchronize their menstrual cycles as with females of other species).

Both wondered what was the cause that promotes menstrual synchrony among heterosexual women: the answer is that in its relations is semen.

Gallup and Burch then deduced that certain chemicals in human semen biology affect women through vaginal absorption, so that women who have sex without a condom, smell different than those who do not use the condom, or at least their bodies emit Splicing pheromones menstrual cycles of women cohabiting.

To test this theory studied 293 women who had to answer a questionnaire about their sexual behavior and a test called the Beck Depression Inventory, which revealed depressive symptoms.

Women who had partners were more stable and have unprotected sex, had lower levels of depressive symptoms, while those who used them occasionally, the level increased considerably.

The vagina is surrounded by a vascular network: arteries, blood vessels, lymph vessels and chemicals that are absorbed vaginally, which have an almost direct line with the peripheral circulatory system.

Semen contains over 50 chemicals, hormones, neurotransmitters, endorphins and immunosuppressive drugs, and various compounds that affect mood, including cortisol (increases the affect), estrone (elevated mood), prolactin (works as a natural antidepressant), oxytocin (elevates the mood and creates a sense of attachment), melatonin (a hormone that regulates sleep) and to serotonin (the neurotransmitter best known antidepressant).

The study showed that only 4.5 percent of women who “never” used condoms were considering suicide, while 28.9 percent of those who used it said they considered “sometimes” suicide, while 13.2 percent of the “always” used condoms considered suicide as an option.

Gallup also found that “women exposed to semen perform better on cognitive tests and learning,” which seems to suggest that sperm not only makes women happy, it also improves their intellectual abilities.
